Aim and Research Question(s)

The goal of this study was to design and develop a blended learning concept and exemplary interactive content in the form of educational videos as well as an online course to aid the training of dietetics students in digitalization and digital rehabilitation. The research questions were: I. What are the needs of health care students in relation to the use of the MOOC and have these been met in the best possible way in terms of teaching outcomes? II. Which are the needs of dietetic bachelor students from a 1 ECTS blended design that aims to teach digital rehabilitation? III. To what extent does the online content design meet the needs of dietetics students for 0.5 ECTS self-study of digital rehabilitation?

Background

The demand for digital health care is constantly growing (Sturman,2020). Therefore, healthcare professionals will have to refine and expand the necessary skillset. By doing so, they can properly assist patients with digitalized aspects of healthcare such as mobile rehabilitation. Due to the continued digitalization of healthcare, it is vital to ensure proper education and training for up-and-coming health care professionals who aim to develop their skills, preferably with digital tools such as online courses/MOOCs.

Methods

This study started with a literature review. Based on the results of this research as well as on the observation of the course “Leadership und digitale Innovation” a questionnaire was developed and used in an online survey. To gain further information regarding the content, a group discussion was held. Based on the survey, the observation, and the group discussion the course content has been developed in the form of texts, educational videos and one trivia quiz video. A second, mixed methods questionnaire has been conducted as an online survey to receive feedback and ideas for possible improvements for the online course.

Results and Discussion

In the initial study, participants wanted more in-depth explanations for "Digital Health" and "Design Thinking" in the course "Leadership und digitale Innovation." Consequently, an online course was created with four educational video clips on these topics, uploaded to the author's YouTube Channel. The study and literature findings informed the development of interactive content. Despite positive initial feedback, live testing and adaptation are needed for maximum student benefit. Conclusion

The research found that the blended learning approach in the online course effectively met the needs of dietetics students. It offered a flexible and interactive learning environment, promoting digital literacy skills and preparing students for their future profession in the digital age. Despite recognizing the limitations of MOOCs and e-learning, the positive feedback from students affirmed the advantages and benefits of online learning.
