Aim and Research Question(s)

The aim of this master's thesis is the user-centered development of a click dummy for digital patient admission. For this purpose, the following research questions were defined:

  • What approaches to digital patient admission already exist?
  • How high is the acceptance and usability for the current prototype of Hospital Check-in?
  • What can user-centered development of digital hospital admission on mobile devices look like?

Background

Many hospital processes are still analog and laborious for staff and patients, including conventional, non-digital patient admissions [1]. The urgency of digital process optimization in hospitals has been highlighted by the publication of the Hospital Future Law (KHZG) in Germany [2]. As part of the master's project Hospital Check-in, a prototype for digital patient admission was created and will be further developed.

Methods

A focus group with eight potential users tested the usability of the previous Hospital Check-in prototype. Expert interviews were conducted with a developer of a patient portal and the head of a patient admission from a hospital. By conducting qualitative content analysis according to Mayring, categories were formed that represent the requirements for a new click dummy. The requirements were included in the development using the tool Adobe XD®. An extract of the click sequences between the pages looks like the following illustration: Figure 1: Click sequences between the pages

Results and Discussion

The summarized catalog consists of two KHZG requirements, ten requirements from the focus group, and eight requirements from the expert interviews. Considering the requirements from the catalog, except for the requirement "Explanation in case of incorrect input", three of the twelve pages look like this: Figure 2: Three pages of the new click dummy

Conclusion

All the requirements collected show great potential for further development of digital patient admission. Hospital Check-in's click dummy gives an idea of how hospital patient admissions could look digitally in the future. A video which shows the click-through of the new click dummy can be seen by scanning the QR-Code:
