Aim and Research Question(s)

In most non-trauma resuscitation rooms in Austria, documentation is still done manually on paper. The entry of digitalization in the healthcare sector prompted more resuscitation rooms to get connected to existing Patient Data Management Systems to ensure continuous documentation. There is still no published requirement catalog for this process [1]. The aim of this study was to create a requirements document for the integration process as well as a documentation mockup.

Background

Resuscitation rooms or shock rooms are defined in Europe as part of the emergency department or intensive care units within hospitals. It is used for the initial care of critically ill patients or patients with polytrauma. The resuscitation room has historically emerged from the care of polytrauma patients. In recent years, the importance of care for critically ill internal (non-trauma) emergency patients has increased and calls for a standardized approach like in polytrauma management.

Methods

The methodology of this work is User Centered Design (UCD). First the requirements of a digital documentation got collected in five expert interviews. The findings were combined using the DIVI Emergency Department Protocol data set [3]. Theses elaborated requirements had been used to create an interactive mockup , which was further evaluated with a usability test.

Results and Discussion

The documentation guide should orientate on the ABCDE scheme and ensure continuous documentation all the patient way to the intensive care unit if needed. The recording of allergies, medications, catheterization and the request for laboratory and imaging procedures should be included in the documentation. On the basis of this a mockup (Figure 2) with the software “Pencil” [4] was created. The results of the usability test have shown that the mockup still has potential for optimization. Figure 2: Screenshot start page mockup

Conclusion

The aim of this study was to create a catalog of requirements for digital documentation in non-trauma resuscitation rooms. On the basis of this preliminary work it is now possible to map such documentation in PDMS. In the Kepler Universitätsklinikum Linz the non-trauma resuscitation room will be integrated into this system on the basis of this work.
